Hudson Yards

Illustration 𐄂 Surface Design

As a new icon for New York, the Vessel is an interactive sculpture of interconnecting stairs offering undiscovered views of the city. It serves as the centerpiece of Hudson Yards and is the newest attraction for visitors all over the world.

Fashion-inspired patterns were created for a Signature Collection that would serve as a high-end boutique souvenir, reflective of the new neighborhood.

Pattern Exploration

The goal of the pattern was to create a signature that reflected the Vessel while capturing the luxe lifestyle of the neighborhood. In applications, the piece also needed to complement the existing branding of Hudson Yards while showing a little more personality for product appeal.

❶ Woven Type

Creating the monogram into gridded blocks, I deconstructed the letterforms through color to create a woven pattern. The result is an an abstracted form, purposefully fun and discrete.

❷ Simple Monogram

A chunky letterform set in a repeating pattern, intertwined in a chain-like fashion. I wanted to keep it simple and classy. A black and white stripe border serves to accent the pattern.

❸ Implied

Combines the honeycomb-like pattern of the Vessel and the idea of woven ribbon. In abstraction, the combination also implies the H and Y through intersecting shapes.

The Final: InterlaceThe team chose an understated interlaced pattern that directly referenced the connection and links of the structure of the Vessel.

The Vessel Scarf

To complete the collection, I conceptualized a silk scarf of the Vessel. The artwork features an abstracted rendering of the structure seen from above. Spring tulips and hints of a skyline frame the structure, completing the look.

The scarf and collection was approved and slated for a Spring 2020 arrival, though unfortunately halted temporarily due to the pandemic.
